SYDNEY: The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) has congratulated the Hon. Tony Abbott MP on his ascension to Federal Leader of the Liberal party, and in turn, Leader of the Opposition.
Mr. Abbott takes over from the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP, who has moved onto the backbench. The Hon. Joe Hockey MP, of Armenian origin, remains in his role of Shadow Treasurer.
"I do feel humbled and daunted by what's ahead but I also feel proud and exhilarated at the prospect of leading this great Liberal Party," Mr. Abbott said.
"I will do my best to be a consultative and collegial leader."
Mr. Abbott has held a number of senior Cabinet positions over his long career, including serving former Prime Minister John Howard as his government's Minister for Health and Minister for Employment.
Mr. Abbott is a long-time friend of the Armenian-Australian community and has met several ANC Australia delegations in Canberra over the last three years.
