SYDNEY: Over 150 Sydney Armenians responded positively to their alarm rings, braved the early morning chill last Wednesday, and gathered at the Armenian Cultural Centre for Armenia's Euro 2012 qualifying match against the Republic of Ireland, which kicked off at 4:45am (AEDT).
While Armenia was unfortunate to go down 2-1 in Dublin, the atmosphere among those gathered in Willoughby was jovial; a fact helped by the traditional 'manayish' breakfast served up by the organisers and the outstanding performance of the young men in the red of Armenia.
The Agoomp crowd, many dressed in red, blue and orange, rode every play, and were yelling at the hall's new big screen when the referee decided to send off Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovsky for a hand ball, despite replays proving the ball had been handled by the Irish striker before rebounding off Berezovksy's chest.
That decision proved crucial as Armenia conceded a comical own goal, then another and ran out of legs when trying to fight back from 2-0 down with 10 men on the pitch.
While Armenia's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign proved fruitless, the World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign is set to begin with the Armenians high on confidence.
The Agoomp in Willoughby will be Armenia's home ground in Sydney, and invites ALL to join in the fun when the next series of qualifiers begin!
